| The Inspiration The genesis of this idea is the works of Virginia Woolf and her insight into the complexity and unpredictability of the human mind. It is apparent to me that the mind is, in many ways, reflected in my paintings. What at first seems obvious often masks more complex and deeper issues. In the same way that my collages are multi-faceted works of art that are built up with layer upon layer of differing materials, some overt, some almost imperceptible, so too the mind is formed of different experiences, predjudices, inclinations and opinions, Through “Under One Roof “ I aim to convey the diversity of the human condition by marrying the elements of my work with those of diverse artists from differing backgrounds and cultures. The aim is that the interaction of my paintings with their poetry, prose, media and music will create a genuine reflection of the diversity that I observe and encounter here in London on a daily basis. I choose to sign my work on the reverse of the paintings to enable the owner the freedom of how they wish to present it. The lack of an ‘anchor’ in an artists signature ensures that my view is not imposed on which way the work should be hung. I believe that this too reflects the versatility of the mind, which can be shaped and adapted to meet the needs and conditions of its local environment and hope that “Under One Roof “ will contribute to the greater debate of what art represents to the broader public. I am striving to create this dynamic through the initiation of this project ; to create an impactful, complex and ultimately very personal exhibition that offers the viewer a wealth of choices in how they view, absorb and interpret this body of work.
